Laparoscopic and open hernia repair — inguinal, umbilical, incisional, hiatal and complex abdominal wall reconstruction.

Hernia Surgery

A hernia is a protrusion of an organ or tissue through a weak spot in the muscle wall. Common types include inguinal (groin), umbilical, incisional and hiatus hernias. Modern hernia repair uses mesh reinforcement via laparoscopic (TEP/TAPP) or open techniques, tailored to the patient.

  • Inguinal (groin), umbilical, incisional and hiatus hernias
  • Laparoscopic TEP/TAPP with mesh reinforcement
  • Component separation for complex ventral hernias
  • Day-care surgery for most inguinal and umbilical repairs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hernia?
A hernia is a protrusion of abdominal contents through a weakened area of the muscle wall. Common sites are the groin, umbilicus, previous surgical scars and the diaphragm.
Do all hernias need surgery?
Symptomatic hernias should be repaired. Small asymptomatic inguinal hernias in elderly patients may be watched, but surgery is usually recommended because of the risk of obstruction or strangulation.
What is laparoscopic hernia repair?
Laparoscopic repair uses 3 small incisions to place a mesh behind the muscle wall. TEP (totally extraperitoneal) and TAPP (transabdominal preperitoneal) are the two main techniques for inguinal hernia.
What is a mesh?
Mesh is a synthetic or biological material used to reinforce the hernia repair, significantly reducing the risk of recurrence.
Are hernia surgeries day-care?
Yes — most inguinal, umbilical and small ventral hernia repairs are done as day-care (same-day discharge) procedures.
What is an incisional hernia?
An incisional hernia develops at the site of a previous surgical scar. It often needs laparoscopic or open repair with mesh, sometimes with component separation for large defects.
Can hernia come back after surgery?
With modern mesh repair, recurrence rates are under 2-3%. Risk is higher with smoking, obesity, chronic cough and poor wound healing.
What is strangulation?
Strangulation is when the blood supply to the hernia contents is cut off — a surgical emergency requiring urgent repair, sometimes with bowel resection.
How long is recovery after hernia surgery?
Most patients return to desk work in 1 week and normal activities in 2-4 weeks. Heavy lifting should be avoided for 4-6 weeks.
Is hernia surgery painful?
Modern laparoscopic repair is much less painful than traditional open surgery. Most patients manage with simple painkillers after discharge.
